Fascial Bodywork for Chronic Pain, Stress and Emotional Wellbeing
Have you ever noticed that tension in one part of your body seems to be connected to something happening elsewhere. Or why an old injury, a stressful period, or years of sitting at a desk can seem to leave a lasting imprint.
One way of understanding these experiences is through the body's connective tissue network: fascia.
When pain becomes part of everyday life
Chronic pain can affect much more than the place where you feel it. When something in the body has been uncomfortable for a long time, we can begin to move differently, protect certain areas or unconsciously hold tension around them. An old injury, repetitive movement, a past surgery, or prolonged postural habits can all contribute to restrictions throughout our fascia.
And then there is stress. When we're under pressure, our bodies respond. We might clench our jaw, tighten our shoulders, hold our breath or feel a general sense of bracing.
Over time, this can all contribute to our fascia becoming ‘stuck’.
What is Fascia?
Fascia is web-like connective tissue that is responsible for the flow and structure around all of our cells. It's not simply a wrapping for our muscles. Fascia forms a continuous network throughout the body, it connects to everything and communicates with everything.
This interconnectedness is one of the reasons Fascial Bodywork can take a whole-body approach. Rather than only focusing on the place where you experience pain or tension, we can become curious about the wider patterns within your body.
How does Fascial Bodywork work?
Fascial Bodywork is a gentle, hands-on approach.
During a session, I use various techniques including sustained pressure to target your fascia, encouraging greater ease and fluidity to areas of restriction. Rather than pushing into the body or trying to force a release, I listen to the subtle changes in the tissues and allow the work to unfold at its own pace.
For someone living with persistent pain, this approach can provide an opportunity to experience their body differently. There is no need to push through discomfort, instead, we create space to notice and explore new patterns of movement.
Sometimes the changes are physical - perhaps a sense of greater ease or freedom of movement. Sometimes the most significant shift is simply becoming more aware of your body.
I generally advise an initial commitment of 3 weekly or fortnightly sessions to give the body time to shift and address a specific concern.
The connection between stress and the body
Many of us know instinctively that emotional experiences affect the body.
You might notice your stomach tighten when you're anxious, your chest become restricted when you're overwhelmed, or your shoulders rise when you're under pressure. Our physical and emotional experiences are closely intertwined.
Fascial Bodywork offers a body-based approach to support emotional wellbeing, where you are encouraged to notice what you’re experiencing.
Some people find that emotions surface as sensations arise during a session. Others simply experience a feeling of deep rest. There is no expectation that anything needs to be released. You don't have to uncover the reason for your tension or revisit difficult experiences. You can simply notice what is present and any shifts that may arise.
Who is Fascial Bodywork for?
Fascial Bodywork may be particularly interesting if you:
Live with ongoing or persistent pain or physical tension
Have an old injury or surgery that affects how your body feels or moves
Notice that stress shows up physically in your body
Feel as though you're constantly holding or bracing
Want to develop a deeper awareness of your body
Are looking for a gentle, non-invasive approach to bodywork
Feel emotionally overwhelmed and would value a quiet, supportive space
Want to reconnect with your body after a difficult or stressful period
You don't need to know exactly what's going on. We can start simply with where you are now.
A different relationship with your body
Fascial Bodywork isn't about forcing your body to change. It's about listening. Listening to subtle sensations, patterns, and changes. And perhaps beginning to notice that your body is communicating with you all the time.
If you're living with chronic pain, stress or a sense of disconnection from your body, Fascial Bodywork can offer a way to explore new sensations, new movement, and reconnect with yourself in a calm and supportive space.
